How to Make Seed Tape!
One of the biggest challenges facing gardeners in growing plants from seed has to do with the planting. It is important that seeds be properly spaced for optimum growth to ensue. But how do you go about getting those tiny, almost microscopic seeds set into the soil without all of them clumping together or blowing astray?
There is a simple solution that can be inexpensively concocted in your own home and most likely from supplies that you already have on hand. In order to make the seed tape you will need just a few items: a roll of toilet paper, a spray bottle full of water and the seeds you wish to plant. It is better if the toilet paper is at least 2 ply so it is thick enough to be sturdy for seed transport.
To get started, gather your supplies together. Read the back of your seed packet to discover what the proper spacing should be for the seeds you wish to grow. Unroll a length of toilet paper that will accommodate the proper spacing. Spray the center of the toilet paper with water from the spray bottle along the entire length of the paper. Carefully place the seeds along the moistened area on the toilet paper, taking care to space them as recommended for optimal growth.
Once the seeds are spread out nicely, fold the remaining toilet paper over the top of the seeds, starting at the edge of the paper and folding one third of the paper over and then the other third of the paper over that. The seeds will end up completely covered. Tap the seeds down using something lightweight like a plastic cup. Mist the covered seeds one more time and then carry carefully out to your garden to plant.
Dig a furrow the depth you normally would to plant the seeds if they were loose. Gently place your seed tape into the furrow and cover over with soil. Water and watch the seeds sprout. Take pride in your perfectly spaced garden as it grows.
